ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM

Coordinator: Mary Jo LaRocco, (401) 341-2165

Location: McKillop Library, Room 306

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed for degreeseeking students who have scored below a 550 (213 computer based equivalent) on the TOEFL examination. The ESL focus is on providing both language and cultural support for success in academic and student life. Small class sizes and a committed faculty help create a friendly environment that promotes active learning as well as the self-confidence required for fluency. The ESL program emphasizes participation in social, cultural and educational events around the campus community, which helps to ease the sometimes-difficult transition into American culture.

The ESL Resource Center is dedicated to providing language tutoring assistance and unlimited access to resources that address the specific needs of non-native English-speaking students. It is a place where students can use videos, audiocassettes, CD ROM’s, books, periodicals, and other materials for self-study. In addition, experienced and supportive tutors are available for both occasional and regularly scheduled academic assistance.

Core Curriculum Language Requirements

All Salve Regina University students are required to complete coursework in English and in a Modern Language. International students fulfill the language requirements in the core by demonstrating competency in English through a combination of English and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses as determined by the ESL Coordinator. All students are required to complete up to level four, ESL104, regardless of initial placement. Students may also be advised to complete ENG100, Academic Writing for the ESL student.

All students, including those holding an International Baccalaureate, will be required to take the core and core complement English courses. ESL courses do not fulfill the English core curriculum requirement.

- Mariana Bensaude Portugal

“Many students, advisors, and teachers have helped me many times, despite the fact that it is hard to understand my broken English. I appreciate many people’s kindness to me at Salve. I would like to emulate their behavior in my life.”
