Adopt-a-Spot maintenance days

Help care for our Adopt-a-Spot garden in Eisenhower Park by watering and weeding the flowerbeds. The park is in Washington Square, a quick trolley ride away from Salve Regina. Maintenance takes place from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, and members of the University community are encouraged to consider supporting this initiative on a regular basis.

Thursday, Dec. 1 through Friday, Dec. 9 (weekdays): Salvation Army bell ringing

Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. to ring the Salvation Army bells at the Stop & Shop on Bellevue Avenue. Volunteers may sign up for two-hour shifts: 10 a.m. to noon, noon to 2 p.m., 2-4 p.m., 4-6 p.m. or 6-8 p.m.
Transportation: This site is located on the trolley line.
Volunteer cap: 3 volunteers per shift

Tuesday, Dec. 6: Emmanuel Church Soup Kitchen

Volunteers are needed from 4:30-6:30 p.m. to set up, work and clean up the soup kitchen.
Transportation: This site is located on the trolley line.

Tuesday, Dec. 13: St. Paul's Church

Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to tie fleece blankets for St. Paul's Church's Warm Up Wednesday program. This volunteer opportunity will be held in the Office of Community Service, located in Wakehurst, Room 201. Volunteers may sign up for two- or three-hour shifts: 9-11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1-4 p.m.
Transportation: Not available for this on-campus event.

Tuesday, Dec. 13 through Friday, Dec. 16: Salvation Army Gift Packing and Organization

Volunteers are needed to help organize and pack holiday gifts at the Salvation Army on Memorial Boulevard. Volunteers can choose from two shifts: 9-11 a.m. or 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Transportation: This site is located on the trolley line.
Volunteer cap: 10 per shift

Monday, Jan. 16: God's Community Garden

Volunteers are needed from noon to 3 p.m. to harvest the gardens during the first MLK day of service at Community Methodist Gardens.
Transportation: Van transportation is provided. Pick up at Miley Hall at 11:45 a.m., return at 3 p.m.

Past Service Opportunities From the Fall 2016 Semester

  • Sunday, Sept. 18: Sharkfest Swim. Volunteers are needed from 7-10 a.m. to check swimmers in and out at the start and finish lines during Clean Ocean Access’s fourth annual Sharkfest swim in Newport harbor. Volunteers are also needed from 8-10 a.m. to help with water safety using a kayak or stand-up paddleboard.
  • Sunday, Sept. 25: Cluny Country Fair.Volunteers are needed from noon to 4 p.m. to run small games and activities during Cluny School’s annual Country Fair.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 27 and Wednesday, Sept. 28: Bloodmobile. Volunteers are needed from noon to 6 p.m. to help with the Rhode Island Blood Center’s blood drive at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Two-hour shifts are available. Time slots are noon to 2 p.m., 2-4 p.m. and 4-6 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 1: Norman Bird Sanctuary's Harvest Fair. Volunteers are needed from noon to 5 p.m. to help with various children’s games and arts and crafts at the Norman Bird Sanctuary’s annual Harvest Fair.
  • Friday, Oct. 7: Trinity Church Pumpkin Patch. Volunteers are needed from 5-8 p.m. to unload pumpkins from various trucks at Trinity Church in Newport.
  • Sunday, Oct. 9: Newport Marathon. Volunteers are needed from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help with dune protection and recycling for the Newport Marathon at Easton's (First) Beach. Three- and four-hour shifts are available. Time slots are 5-8 a.m., 8-11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and noon to 3 p.m.
  • Thursday, Oct. 13 and Friday, Oct. 14: Daffy Days. Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Wakehurst lawn to pack 45,000 daffodil bulbs in “Let’s Get Daffy” bags, which will be given to Newport residents and businesses to plant throughout the city this fall.
  • Saturday, Oct. 15: Relay for Life. Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. to help with setup and breakdown for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on campus. Two-hour shifts are available. Time slots are 10 a.m. to noon, noon to 2 p.m., 2-4 p.m., 4-6 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 22: Alumni Day of Service. Current students are invited to volunteer alongside alumni, families and friends during the second annual Alumni Day of Service. Participants will volunteer from 10-11:30 a.m. at God's Community Gardens (formerly known as Methodist Community Gardens), located at 200 Turner Road in Middletown.
  • Saturday, Oct. 29: City of Newport fall recycling day. Volunteers are needed from 8 a.m. to noon at Easton’s (First) Beach to set up the event, help traffic flow, greet residents and break down the event.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 1: Emmanuel Church Soup Kitchen. Volunteers are needed from 4:30-6:30 p.m. to set up, work and clean up the soup kitchen.
  • Saturday, Nov. 5: Aquidneck Land Trust Race for Open Space. Volunteers are needed from 9:15-11:30 a.m. to help with the Aquidneck Land Trust's Race for Open Space. Duties include race registration, helping at street crossings along the race course and spotting/directing runners along the race course.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 8: St. Paul's Church Warm up Wednesday. Volunteers are needed from 6-8 p.m. at the Mercy Center to bake sweet treats for St. Paul's Church's Warm Up Wednesday program.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 16: St. Paul's Church Warm up Wednesday. Volunteers are needed from 9-11 a.m. at the Mercy Center to bake sweet treats for St. Paul's Church's Warm Up Wednesday program.
  • Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19: Emmanuel Church Holiday Fair. Volunteers are needed to help set up for Emmanuel Church's annual holiday fair. Three-hour shifts are available. Time slots are 3-6 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. on Friday, and 7-10 a.m., 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. on Saturday.
