Progression in the Nursing Major
In order to maintain status as a nursing major, the student must achieve a minimum grade of “C” in all nursing courses and nursing support courses. In addition, the student must maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 2.7 in order to continue in the Nursing major. No student can advance to the third-year level nursing courses until successfully completing all second-year level nursing courses. A student who does not maintain status in the Department of Nursing because of failure to meet one or more of the stated requirements will be dismissed from the department. The student may petition the department for reinstatement.

If a student receives a grade of less than “C” in a required nursing support course, this course may be repeated only once. Failure to achieve a grade of “C” or higher in a repeated course will result in dismissal from the nursing major. In addition, students must satisfactorily pass the clinical component of nursing courses in order to progress in the major. Any student who fails the clinical component in a nursing course will be unable to attain a grade of higher than “C-” for the course. The student will not be allowed to progress and the course must be repeated. A student may repeat no more than a total of two (2) courses (nursing or nursing support courses).

All students’ academic records are reviewed at the end of each semester by the Admission Progression and Retention Committee. Students who fail to meet the standards for progression will be notified by letter from the committee of their standing. In addition, students are expected to conduct themselves at all times, both on and off campus, in a manner that will not reflect unfavorably on the profession, the University, or the department.

Major in Nursing (B.S.)
To qualify for the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nursing, students must satisfactorily complete 60 credits in nursing courses, and the support courses: BIO205, 206, 210, CHM121, PSY100, SOC110, STA201, and the Common Core and Core Complement courses. The four-year program is planned by the student in consultation with a nursing faculty advisor to attain the required 128 credits for graduation.

Health Requirements
In order for students to participate in clinical nursing experiences, health and immunization requirements must be met. Students admitted to the nursing major are provided with specific requirements regarding physical exam and immunizations requirements to complete prior to participation in a clinical setting. No student is allowed to start clinical until all requirements are met and forms are current and present in the nursing office.

Professional Liability Insurance
Students taking clinical nursing courses must be covered by liability insurance. A fee will be assessed to the student bill each fall to purchase this policy. Student holding a registered nurse license are also required to provide proof of professional liability insurance.

CPR Certification and Criminal Background Investigation
All students enrolled in clinical courses must provide evidence of current CPR certification from the American Heart Association (Health care provider/professional level). A person convicted of a felony is prohibited from licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Board of Nurse Registration in various states. Thus, students will consent to have a criminal background investigation conducted once they are accepted to the nursing program.

Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to prepare students to become professional nurses, able to focus on human experiences and responses across the lifespan and to develop an understanding of the influence of global issues on local health. In accordance with the American Nursing Association’s 2003 Social Policy Statement students learn through various courses in nursing how to:
partner with individuals, families, communities and populations to address issues such as:
• Promotion of health and safety
• Care and self-care processes
• Adaptation to physiologic and pathophysiologic processes
• Emotion related to experiences of birth, growth and development, health, illness, disease and death
• Meaning ascribed to health and illness
• Decision-making and ability to make choices
• Relationships, role performance, and change processes within relationships
• Social policies and their effects on the health of individuals, families, and communities
• Healthcare systems and their relationships with access to and quality of health care, and
• The environment and prevention of disease
(Nursing’s Social Policy Statement, 2nd Edition, Washington, D.C.: American Nursing Association, 2003, p.7)
