Salve Regina University's recreation and athletic facility
reflects Newport's rich architectural heritage and the
American vernacular style. The 68,000 square-foot building
contextually supports the Ochre Point area. Given the
historic nature of the campus and neighborhood, unusual
steps were taken to have the structure complement its
environment. Internationally celebrated architect Robert
A. M. Stern is a fitting modern counterpart to Gilded
Age giants like Richard Morris Hunt and McKim, Mead and
White. The innovative design, which keeps much of the
facility below ground, features a shingle-style exterior
with wood-framed windows, green trim and gables. It includes
a series of exterior porches with flaring roofs and a
decorative cupola that is intended to reduce the building's
scale and offer a harmonious appearance.
The main level houses a gymnasium for basketball,
volleyball and other activities as well as a student
lounge and Hall of Fame area. The below-grade level
contains a weight and exercise room, aerobic studio,
training room, locker rooms and offices, meeting rooms
and storage facilities.
Rodgers Recreation Center honors
the generous leadership of Thomas A. Rodgers Jr.,
advocate of academic achievement
and campus development, who has been a Salve trustee
for more than 20 years. |
