Salve Regina University's Center for Advising, Career and Life Design works with you to plan your educational path, access resources and services across campus and foster the skills you need for academic success.

Advising is collaborative, requiring participation from both you and your advisor. Together you'll build your success throughout your entire educational experience at Salve.

Incoming Students

  • First-year students: A Compass advisor will work with you to navigate major, minor and course selection for your first semester. After you deposit, you'll get an email from the Compass advising team inviting you to complete an advising and registration checklist in Canvas, Salve's learning management system. We'll also book a virtual advising meeting where you'll meet with a Compass advisor to discuss your journey to Salve, interests and course selection. Your Compass advisor will be your main point of contact until the semester begins.
  • Transfer students: A Compass advisor will help you determine how your transfer credit applies to your academic record and estimate your potential graduation date.

Current Students

Academic advising is led by the Compass advising team and faculty advisors. Compass advisors support incoming students (including transfer students), first-year students and exploratory students.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can find your advisor's name and email address in My Salve. Click "Student Planning," then "Go to Plan and Schedule," then "Advising."

  • First-year students are assigned a Compass advisor, who will be their advisor throughout their first year.
  • Undeclared/exploratory students are assigned a Compass advisor throughout their time as an exploratory student, then transition to a faculty advisor in their second year, once they declare a major.
  • Transfer students are assigned a Compass advisor after they deposit. If you have declared a major and have sophomore standing, you will be assigned to a faculty advisor at the start of your first semester.
  • Upperclassmen who have declared a major are assigned a full-time faculty member from their academic program. Each department will determine if that faculty advisor will be your advisor until graduation or if it will change each year. Depending on your academic plan you may have more than one advisor.
  • Graduate students are assigned their graduate program director or primary advisor. You can find your advisor's contact information in My Salve. For additional support, contact Elaine Forsythe, graduate academic progress specialist. General inquiries should be directed to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies at gradoffice@salve.edu.

Supplemental Advisors

You'll get the most out of your Salve experience if you meet with your Compass advisor throughout your first year. Key times include:

  • The add/drop period at the beginning of each semester if you are considering a schedule change.
  • If/when you are considering withdrawing from a course or any additional academic concerns.
  • If/when you are thinking about changing your major/minor.
  • During the pre-registration period when you select courses for the following semester.
  • When you're seeking summer opportunities in and out of the classroom.

To ensure your advisor is available, either book a meeting with them or attend drop-in hours.

  • Each advisor has an individual link for appointments. You'll find it in your advisor's email signature or in their Canvas advising course.
  • Advisors offer virtual and in-person meetings in the academic year and virtual meetings in the summer.
  • Dedicated drop-in hours: Come to the Center for Advising, Career and Life Design on the first floor of McKillop Library 1:30-4 p.m. on Tuesdays during the academic year. Students are assisted on a first-come, first-served basis (in-person only). You can confirm a 15-minute time slot with a Compass advisor using the drop-in iPad.
  • There are no Tuesday drop-in hours if the University is closed, if students are on break and during finals. There are additional drop-in hours during add/drop week, registration week and the course withdrawal and pass/fail deadline.
  • Incoming students (first-year and/or transfers): The Compass advising team will connect you with Canvas, an online platform to guide you through registration. Please check your salve.edu email or email compasscenter@salve.edu with questions.
  • Current students: During the semester, you'll be assigned a registration time by the Office of the Registrar. Contact your advisor for assistance with planning courses for the upcoming semester. You can find instructions on planning and searching for courses in the Campus portal.

You can plan and register for courses in My Salve (click "Student Planning"). "My Progress" holds your academic evaluation and is where you search for courses. "My Plan and Schedule" is where you register for courses after you have planned them. Instructions on planning and searching for courses are in the portal under "Instructional Materials," then "More Videos and Documentation."

Compass Advising

Every Salve student completes the Salve Compass program, a four-year experience integrating academic coursework and hands-on learning that connects college to a successful, fulfilling career and a well-lived life.

Throughout the program, Compass advisors support you in mapping your academic, extracurricular and Compass experiences and help you envision how these experiences play a role in your professional, personal and academic development. Your Compass advisor works with you to navigate thoughtful course, major and minor selections; develop personal, professional and career goals; and think deeply about what you want out of your Salve experience.

After your first year, you'll transition to working with a faculty advisor from your academic program. If you haven't declared a major, you'll continue to work with your Compass advisor until you do so.

Compass advisors can help you:

  • Explore, add and/or change majors and minors
  • Navigate course selection
  • Withdraw from courses
  • Understand academic policies
  • Stay on top of graduation requirements and your progress
  • Engage in preliminary conversations around career development, with referrals to career coaches
  • Connect to other campus offices and resources
