What's My Why?

In my first criminology theory class at Northeastern University in 2011, I realized that most contemporary criminological theories had been proposed and developed by white male criminologists. From the perspective of an immigrant Ph.D. student, this seemed absurd, as crime occurs everywhere, at any time, across the world. Since then, I have been testing the generalizability and applicability of criminological theories to delinquent behaviors among South Korean youths, Caribbean youths and youths in European countries. My most recent study tested Agnew’s (2005) general theory of crime and delinquency on deviant behaviors among Albanian youth.

Professional Experience

As a comparative criminologist testing the generalizability and applicability of theories, any country with any cultural heritage serves as my research site. In line with this, I visited nine countries in the Western Balkans - including Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Romania - in July 2024 to collaborate with researchers. During my visits, I met with government officials, law school professors, criminologists, psychologists and U.S. embassy personnel in each country. My office is the world, and the researchers I meet along the way are my colleagues.
