The Department of Mathematical Sciences provides students with a solid foundation in the principles of mathematics.
Our program acquaints students with a broad range of concepts and tools in modern mathematics, fosters an appreciation for the beauty of mathematics and its power in applications, strengthens their powers of abstract reasoning, and develops their analytic ability for examining and discovering structures and patterns.
In the classroom, our distinguished faculty members - all of whom hold advanced degrees in mathematics or applied mathematics - help students hone their reasoning and problem-solving skills with a challenging curriculum that explores the fundamentals of mathematics, statistics and computational science.
Our graduates possess both the creative and critical thinking skills needed for success in an array of professions. Some enter graduate programs, while others pursue careers in such fields as business, finance and teaching.

<span><h1 class="node-title">Student Organizations</h1></span><div class="section field field-name-field-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item odd"><h2>Math Club</h2>
<p>The Math Club creates fun and interesting experiences for students interested in mathematics. Club members view films, host student and practitioner speakers and participate in conference competitions. Students have also created a Math Night for Learning Unlimited, a program for adults with developmental disabilities, and assisted with registration for a regional math conference. Members do not need to be mathematics majors. An interest in math is all that is required.</p>
<h2>Pi Mu Epsilon</h2>
<p>Pi Mu Epsilon is the national mathematics honorary society. The purpose of the society is to promote scholarly activity in mathematics among the students in academic institutions. Founded in 1914 at Syracuse University, Pi Mu Epsilon currently has more than 350 chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States. Salve Regina's chapter was installed in 2013.</p>

Historical notes are included throughout the course. Calculus II or its equivalent is a prerequisite, and the course fulfills the Core Curriculum requirement in mathematics.</p>

<span><h1 class="node-title">What Can I Do With This Degree?</h1></span><div class="section field field-name-field-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item odd"><p>Students who major in mathematics gain logical and abstract reasoning skills and problem solving abilities, preparing them for a wide range of career options. Employers that have their own training programs often look for such traits.</p>
<h2>In the Workforce</h2>
<p>Students who have a high level of mathematical expertise can enter technical fields such as engineering, medicine, environmental science, computer programming or statistical analysis. Other career options include cartographer (mapmaker), cryptanalyst, technical writer, market research analyst, architect and geologist.</p>
<p>Mathematics teachers and specialists are in demand at every level of education. The U.S. government hires mathematicians for defense work and for many other purposes, including analysis of census data. Actuaries evaluate risks for insurance companies and set rates; this occupation is often listed as a top career choice based on salary, autonomy, working environment and other factors.</p>
