Salve Regina's chapter of Best Buddies helps to create and nurture enduring friendships between students and adults with developmental disabilities. Buddies talk and email regularly and gather monthly for special functions such as athletic events, bowling, movies and dances.
Council for Exceptional Children
A University-wide student organization, the Council for Exceptional Children works to improve the quality of life for individuals with exceptionalities and their families through advocacy and programming. The council sponsors an annual Halloween dance for Salve Regina's Best Buddies and Learning Unlimited participants and, in collaboration with SRU Dance, coordinates the Let Loose Dance Troupe, which allows children to enjoy the experience of dance performance. The council also offers students networking and employment opportunities.
Salve Regina's Special Olympics committee organizes volunteers for Special Olympics Rhode Island's East Bay Area Games, held locally each spring. Volunteers work with local vendors, coordinate DJs and organizations for Olympic Town, provide public relations services and assist athletes during the event. The University mission of mercy and justice is an integral part of Salve Regina's involvement in Special Olympics Rhode Island. Service on the committee is open to all students, allowing the Salve Regina community to reach out to the special needs community in a greater way.
Student Education Association
A student-led club for education majors, the Student Education Association is open to students from all programs in the Department of Education. The club provides support and camaraderie for students majoring in education through a mentoring program, special events and casual monthly meetings. Student Education Association members participate in a variety of community events, such as March Into Reading and Special Olympics.
