As guardians of Salve Regina University, members of its Board of Trustees are intricately involved in supporting and conveying the university’s mission, providing long-range planning, ensuring responsible management and communicating the needs of society to the university community. The Board works in collaboration with the Conference for Mercy Higher Education (CMHE), which was incorporated for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing the Mercy mission for the various Sisters of Mercy colleges and universities throughout the United States. A nominating committee identifies qualified candidates for Salve Regina’s Board of Trustees. Following comprehensive board review, candidates may then be elected as Trustees by majority vote of the Board. Trustees participate in a comprehensive orientation program to directly engage them within all areas of the university, including administration, finance, academics, enrollment, student life, university relations, advancement and mission. Salve Regina’s Board of Trustees currently consists of 34 members, including the university president and two Trustee Emerita. Presently, 16 trustees are female (47%) and 18 eighteen trustees are male (53%). Thirty-two trustees are Caucasian and two trustees are African American (one male and one female). Members of the Board include alumni, parents of graduates, the Bishop of the Diocese of Providence, and regional community and business leaders. The Board includes six members of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Board members come from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. Historically, the Board has had between 25 and 35 members. Board members serve four-year terms with the possibility of re-election to a second four-year term, and are eligible for re-election after an interval of at least one year. Trustees are expected to serve on at least one of five board committees, including Academic and Student Affairs, Finance, Properties, University Relations and Advancement, and Trustee Matters. Other Board committees include: Executive Committee, Audit Committee, Compensation Committee, Honorary Degree Committee, Investment Committee, Long Range Planning, Mission Committee and Ad Hoc Committees. The Academic and Student Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees frequently invites both faculty members and students to meetings in order to discuss the effectiveness of the various programs and policies that affect students. The Faculty Assembly brings together the full-time faculty and has clear lines of communication with the President. The speaker of the Faculty Assembly is invited to board meetings.
