ABOUT
Mission Integration Statement
To provide students an outlet for creative thought and action and to entertain the Salve Regina University community with a wide range of music, commentary and live sports broadcasting.
History
WSRU was officially recognized as a student organization by Salve Regina University in 1998. The station moved to its present location in 2000 upon completion of an extensive renovation of the garden level in the Wakehurst Student Center. Funding and local restrictions on broadcast antennas prevented the station from securing an FCC license so the station initially broadcast on a close-circuit campus television channel. Following several years of successful broadcasting, student interest in WSRU waned and the station fell silent in 2002. Several attempts were made to resurrect the station in the ensuing years, but technical problems prohibited the station from reaching its intended audience. WSRU was revived during the fall 2006 semester with the acquisition of new equipment and the purchase of a license with Live365 to broadcast on the web. The station officially began broadcasting online on Monday, February 26, 2007.
Organizational Structure
WSRU is comprised of the general manager and four departments: Music, Programs, Promotions and Technical Support. The general manager is responsible for providing oversight for all aspects of the station. Each department is headed by a director who reports to the general manager. Directors are responsible for supervising staff and implementing plans that relate to their specific areas of responsibility. The general manager and station directors are selected in April prior to the end of each academic year.
Funding
WSRU is funded by the student activity fee which is collected annually by the university. The station receives a percentage of these funds and uses them for licensing agreements, equipment, music and promotions.
Licensing & Technical Information
WSRU has a fully equipped production studio utilizing the Apple Macintosh platform for on-air and editing computers. The station broadcasts live on the internet via Live365, which also manages the licensing compliance for the station. The studio has the capability to pre-record shows using Apple Garage Band and Apple Logic Pro. Live in-studio and remote broadcasts are possible, as well.
