Skateboards & Inline Skates
Bicycles, skateboards and inline skates are not permitted in the building.
Bicycles must be left outdoors and individuals wearing inline skates
must remove them prior to entering the building.
Club Mailboxes
All recognized student organizations are provided a mailbox in the student
center office. Organizations are asked to have mail sent in the organization’s
name, and not in the name of an individual member. Mail should be sent
to the following address:
<Name of Organization>
Office of Student Activities
Salve Regina University
100 Ochre Point Avenue
Newport, RI 02840
Student organizations and university departments may distribute announcements
in club mailboxes provided they relate to official club and/or university
business. Inappropriate material will be removed and discarded. Club
mailboxes are emptied at the end of May and contents discarded unless
organizations make prior arrangements with the office of student activities.
Display Cases
The office of student activities maintains display cases on the first
floor that can be reserved by recognized student organizations during
the academic year. Organizations have the opportunity to reserve a display
case for a maximum of two weeks per semester. Reservations for the fall
and spring semesters may be made as early as the first day of the preceding
semester. Reservations are accepted at the office of student activities
during regular business hours. All reservations must be made in person.
Displays must adhere to all university guidelines and may not be used
to degrade, disgrace or otherwise harm any individual or group. Organizations
must remove their displays by the agreed upon deadline or they will
be removed and discarded by student activities staff.
Distribution of Literature
Recognized student organizations are permitted to distribute literature
in the building with prior approval from the director of student activities.
Literature should be of a non-commercial nature and include the name
of the sponsoring organization. The distribution of literature should
not obstruct the free flow of pedestrian traffic or be forced upon individuals.
Dress
Individuals are required to wear shirts and footwear in the building.
Fire Safety
The university requires individuals and student organizations to strictly
adhere to all fire safety regulations. While not intended to be a comprehensive
list of regulations, organizations that sponsor activities in the building
must:
- prevent persons from sitting or standing in doorways and aisles
designed as a means of emergency exit from the activity area;
- monitor the number of participants so as not to exceed the maximum
occupancy of the activity area;
- obtain prior approval from the office of student activities before
making any alterations to the activity area;
- provide a minimum 16” clearance between rows when setting
chairs for theatre-style events;
- use flame-retardant decorations; and
- adhere to university and building posting policies.
Fundraising
All fund-raising activities must comply with university policy and city,
state and federal law. Recognized student organizations are permitted
to raise funds in the building provided they have prior approval from
the director of student activities. Organizations must clearly identify
themselves when fund raising, and all profits must be deposited in on-campus
accounts. Fund-raising activities must be in good taste and reflect
the standards of the university.
Magazines & Newspapers
The Wakehurst Student Center subscribes to several magazines and regional
newspapers for the enjoyment and enlightenment of students. Magazines
and newspapers should not be removed from their respective locations
on the garden level and first floor.
Posting
Recognized student organizations and university departments are authorized
to post materials in designated areas of the building. All materials
must be stamped by the office of student activities before they are
posted. Materials that do not bear a stamp mark will be removed and
discarded.
Tacks must be used to hang posters and fliers on bulletin boards, and
string to hang banners on the main stairwell landing. Duct tape, packing
tape, adhesive labels and similar items should not be used to post items
on any surface. Items posted improperly will be removed, and any damage
caused by an improperly posted item will be charged to the organization
and/or individual responsible. Organizations are responsible for removing
and disposing dated posters, fliers and banners in a timely manner.
Posters, fliers and banners can not be posted on fire doors, wood paneling
and molding, drywall, light fixtures, windows, interior doors (with
the exception of office doors), bathroom mirrors and stalls, floor surfaces
(including stairs), and exterior building surfaces.
Room Reservations
Students, faculty and staff interested in reserving space in the building
for meetings must complete an online event planning form (see Salve
Today) a minimum of three business days prior to the proposed meeting
date. Student organizations planning an activity must submit an event
planning form well in advance of the proposed activity date (two to
four weeks, depending upon the activity), and meet with the director
of student activities prior to publicizing the event.
Smoking/Tobacco Products
The Wakehurst Student Center is a smoke and tobacco products-free building.
Individuals who choose to smoke or use other tobacco products must do
so outdoors a minimum of 50 feet from the nearest building entrance.
Tabling
Recognized student organizations and university departments may reserve
3’x6’ tables inside the building to distribute information,
recruit members or conduct approved fund-raising activities. An online
event planning form must be completed and submitted to the office of
student activities a minimum of three business days prior to the proposed
date in order to secure a table and chairs. Tables must be staffed at
all times and must not block the free flow of pedestrian traffic or
encroach on other scheduled activities. Groups are responsible for clearing
their tables and disposing of trash prior to leaving the area.
