Carithers has served as the director of student activities at Salve Regina since August 2002. Under his leadership and guidance, student activities and its related areas have experienced significant growth. During his tenure the number of annual programs has tripled and the level of student involvement has experienced a similar increase. The roster of recognized student organizations has nearly doubled during the same period.

Prior to arriving at Salve Regina, Carithers served in a variety of student affairs-related positions at colleges and universities across the country. During his 24 years in higher education, he has advised numerous student organizations, developed nationally-recognized leadership programs and initiated a variety of social, recreational and developmental programs designed to meet student needs.

In addition to his other duties, Carithers advises the Campus Activities Board and WSRU, provides oversight and support for recognized student organizations and manages the Wakehurst Student Center. He also chairs the university's orientation committee and is responsible for hiring, training and supervising the orientation leader staff.

A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Carithers earned his bachelor's degree in recreation administration from the University of Northern Iowa and his master's degree in recreation and sports management from the University of Idaho.
