Dance Across America![]() The Andréa Rizzo Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing dance therapy to children with cancer and special needs. Andréa Rizzo was a student at Salve Regina University and a member of the dance team. A dedicated dancer, special education teacher and childhood cancer survivor, Andréa’s dream was to help pediatric cancer patients and children with special needs through the power of dance. After graduating from Salve, Andréa attended NYU to pursue a career in dance therapy when she was tragically killed by a drunk driver in May of 2002. Susan Rizzo Vincent, Andréa’s mother, established the Andréa Rizzo Foundation to continue Dréa’s dream of bringing dance therapy to children with cancer and special needs. The organization has grown exponentially over the years. Dréa’s Dream, a dance/movement therapy program instituted at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC has gained notoriety as an alternative to pain medication and as a way for children to express their feelings through the power of dance. The Andréa Rizzo Foundation has also established programs across the country in hospitals and schools to help raise awareness for the benefits of dance therapy. With continued support, the Andréa Rizzo Foundation keeps Dréa’s dream dancing on. In August 2007, SRU Dance made an emotionally powerful contribution to Newport’s Andrea Rizzo Dance Therapy Foundation. The executive board traveled from their hometowns to Newport to show their support for a 2 mile walk organized by the charity, which raises money for children’s cancer research through dance therapy programs
