"Living Off Campus: What You Need to Know"

Every year as part of Fall Festival Weekend, officer Kevin Parsonage of the Newport Police Department, associate dean of students Dr. Gerry Willis and assistant director of residential life Kelly Willette present tips for students on searching for and getting the best rental for their money. At this workshop, students learn what to look for in a lease, where to live, how to get along with neighbors, city laws and much more. The specific date, time and location of the workshop will be announced along with other Fall Festival Weekend events.

State Law Revisions Affect College Students

A new Rhode Island law will penalize hosts who allow underage drinking in their homes, even if they do not supply the alcohol.

Penalties include a misdemeanor-level charge, which may result in a permanent criminal record, along with a minimum fine of $500. State maximums allow for fines up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail. The measure was signed into law by Gov. Donald Carcieri. Fifteen other states have already adopted similar laws.

Anyone 18 years old or older in Rhode Island "who knowingly allows minors to consume alcohol in his or her home" are subject to these penalties. The revised law closes a loophole that officials said had made it virtually impossible to bring charges against adults who knowingly allowed underage drinking. Prior to the revision, authorities could only charge an adult if they had proof they'd purchased the alcohol.

Students need to be aware that house parties they host where underage drinkers are present can be held criminally liable, and also face punishment from their college. This could not only have consequences on their own college future, but give them a criminal record that could hurt their future job prospects. And if someone who attended their party got hurt, or if they hurt someone else, the hosts could also be held liable for civil damages.

100 meal plan

The 100 meal plan is ideal for students living off campus. A block of 100 meals can be used throughout the entire academic year and has the same flexibility as the 14 and 19 meal plans. The 100 meal plan is the only available meal plan in which the student may swipe an additional meal for a guest, making it ideal for off-campus commuters. To sign up for the 100 meal plan, contact the Business Office at (401) 341-2900 or businessoffice@salve.edu.
