Forty percent of the university’s 2,100 undergraduates live off-campus, fostering a sense of cooperation and respect between the Salve Regina and Newport communities.
A Newport city ordinance prohibits access to the Cliff Walk after sundown. This scenic area, so pleasant in the daylight hours, may become a danger zone at night as there is virtually no lighting along the walk itself, and in some areas a misstep may result in a 40-foot drop to the rocks below. Please avoid the Cliff Walk after sundown.
As warmer weather approaches, we all have the desire to be more active outside - if you are walking, running, rollerblading or biking, please remember that it is always best to do so in pairs - especially in the evening hours.
The campus shuttle is available to provide quick and safe access to and from campus. Drop-off/pick-up stations are: The Newport Post Office at the corner of Thames Street and Memorial Boulevard, the Gateway Visitor's Center on America's Cup Avenue, Washington Square on Touro Street in front of the Opera House Cinema (please note the theater lobby is reserved for customers only), and the shopping center on both sides of Bellevue Avenue before it intersects Memorial Boulevard.
The shuttle service phone number is 341-7433 (RIDE)
Shuttle hours of operation are:
On-campus: Daily 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Off-campus: Daily 8 p.m. to midnight
The shuttle will return students to campus until 1 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. If there are adverse weather and road conditions, the off-campus shuttle may be cancelled, but the on-campus shuttle will remain operative. Also note that the R.I.P.T.A. trolley runs until 8 p.m.
Dark clothing worn after sundown is a poor reflector of light, especially in poor weather and low visibility. Walking on the street can be dangerous and extreme caution should be exercised when doing so, particularly along Annandale Road and Narragansett Avenue, and other streets on campus which do not have sidewalks. If driving, be alert for pedestrians and pay strict attention to the speed limit of 25 miles per hour on both roadways.
Students who reside off campus are asked to review fire safety procedures in their dwellings:
Before participating in any online community, please know that whatever you post online is available to anyone, even if access to the site is limited. Keep in mind that prospective employers, police and various agencies are known to access information from Facebook. Specifically, an unflattering profile may have a negative impact on your future employment, and you may remain unaware of the fact.
Rohypnol, GHB and Ketamine, known more commonly as the "date-rape" drugs, are a source of serious concern. These drugs, taken either recreationally or with the intent to render an unwitting victim semi-conscious by a rapist, are extremely dangerous. Never leave a drink unattended, be it a glass of soda, beer or a cocktail. For more information on these drugs, contact University Health Services at Ext. 2261.
Some students frequent Providence via public transportation. Please be aware that at times Providence may be a dangerous place, particularly in the city's nightclub district, so please use caution when visiting there or any other city. There are many activities and events available both on campus and here in Newport for your entertainment and enjoyment. We ask that you exercise the utmost caution and sound judgment in choosing both where and how you spend your leisure time.
During ice and snowstorms, be careful where you walk in relation to the trees on campus. Most are old and some branches may break off due to high wind or heavy snowfall.
Best wishes for the spring semester.
