Forty percent of the university’s 2,100 undergraduates live off-campus, fostering a sense of cooperation and respect between the Salve Regina and Newport communities.

As an off-campus resident, you are fortunate to live in a city with a rich cultural and historical heritage - one that is exciting at times, quaint and quiet after a hectic tourist season, and basically the same size it was when founded 370 years ago. Streets originally intended for foot and horse traffic are congested with automobiles. Parking is always at a premium. Homes and apartments, particularly in neighborhoods where many of our students reside, are located close together. This forced intimacy will place demands on your lifestyle and require a spirit of cooperation with local residents who have chosen to live in Newport and raise families here. Thus, the information enclosed is designed to foster that sense of cooperation and respect that we as a university value so highly.
As a representative of Salve Regina University, you are expected to develop the best in yourself whether in academics, athletics or in the level of maturity you demonstrate as a resident of Newport. Remember, we expect the best from you and will continue to challenge you to live up to that. Your neighbors, in a sense, expect the same and are rightfully entitled to the high quality of life which flows naturally when rights are respected by all concerned. We wish you a rewarding academic year at Salve Regina University, and hope you apply yourself to your studies and that you reap the rewards of your efforts. We also trust you will benefit from your experience in community living - and expect that in May you and your neighbors will be able to say the neighborhood was a better place because you lived there.
Sincerely yours,
Gerald L. Willis, Ed. D, Associate Dean of Students
