ORIENTATION / SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS

Orientation

At the beginning of each semester, a mandatory International Student Information Session is conducted. It is important that you attend this session because we will cover what you need to know as an F1 status student and update you with information on regulations and policies for all non-US Citizens. In addition, you will meet the international student population and affiliates of Salve Regina University, and the administrators, staff, faculty, and student groups who will be helpful to you during your time here.

In today's session, some topics we will address are social security numbers and employment, change of address procedures, I20 signature procedure when leaving the country, and international/cultural events/activities on campus.

Social Security Numbers

In order to apply for a social security number, you must go to the Career Development Office in Tobin Hall. Here, you will receive a letter from the appropriate University administrator, and an application to complete. Then, as a group with the International Student Advisor, or on your own, you bring the following:

The original letter from the designated school official (The DSO or the Career Development Office) which specifies that you are authorized to work and are currently enrolled in a full course of study
Passport
An I-20 (Student) Copy from Salve Regina University
A current I-94

to the Social Security Office in Downtown Newport. With new INS regulations in effect, your new Social Security card will be mailed to you within 3-12 weeks.*

All International Students are eligible to participate in a work-study program on campus, so take advantage to gain some extra money, get experience in an area of interest, and meet more people on campus.
