Biotechniques

Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences

Meeting for six hours each week, this laboratory course covers the theory and practice of commonly used laboratory techniques in molecular biology and biotechnology. Students acquire skills in recombinant DNA technologies, gene manipulation, cloning, cell culture and gene transfer, as well as protein expression, protein purification and characterization. The course emphasizes laboratory skills for entry-level employment in biotechnology or pharmaceutical laboratories and uses advanced equipment, particularly the LiCOR 4300 DNA analyzer equipment procured by a matching grant. Students present their work at a professional regional or national life science meeting at the conclusion of the course.
