The First Year Experience

"Hang on for the Ride of your Life!"

[Building Blocks | Back]

1. Committee and Coordinator
The First Year Experience committee and coordinator are responsible for planning the year, designing training for student mentors and advisors, and making sure the program runs smoothly. The FYE coordinator selects advisors from faculty volunteers and students through an application and interview process.

2. FYE Assistants
FYE assistants are a new addition to the program, which is in its third year. The assistants served as student mentors last year and have volunteered their experience and ideas as a support and resource to the New Student Seminar Advisors and Student Mentors.

3. New Student Seminar Advisors and Student Mentors
Advisors and student mentors work together to facilitate the New Student Seminar class, and to find activities that will educate and engage the first year students in the course material.

4. First Year Students
First year students are the core and purpose of the First Year Experience program, which will provide them with useful connections and resources.

Goals for the First Year Experience
The goals of the program are to widen and enrich the mind of the First Year student. When students arrive, the focus is on individual physical and emotional wellness, stress management, and other life skills. As the year progresses, students will venture out into the community to develop their own view of Salve Regina and Newport. Discussions about social justice and service learning experiences will bring Salve Regina's Mission Statement into action. At the end of the year, the First Year Experience culminates with each student developing a more broadened and informed personal worldview.

The First Year Experience helps students to become life-long learners and responsible citizens of the world, integrating the new student into Salve Regina's learning community and facilitating the transition from high school to the university. The wellness wheel is used to promote and enhance student performance and persistence at Salve Regina. Students are taught responsible academic habits and skills for life-long learning. First year students are introduced to service learning as a way of life.
