GST 110: Connecting the Student to Salve Regina University and the Newport Community Through a Wellness Wheel
New Student Seminar 2004-2005

Course Description

GST 130/131 has been designed to provide an opportunity for students serving as Sophomore Mentors to process and share their experiences with others serving in the same capacity. Participation will be a large component of the course and thus attendance is important. Because this course will be structured as a seminar, your involvement is very important to the success of the course. Please come prepared to share your successes and challenges associated with being a Sophomore Mentor.

Course Objectives

To assist you in the process of self-assessment, reflection, analysis, and evaluation of your experience as a sophomore mentor.

To provide training, support, and resources to assist you in your duties as a sophomore mentor.

Course Requirements

Successful completion of GST 130/131 will be based upon active participation and attendance in the course, feedback and evaluation from the 12 co-facilitators from GST 110/1, and the completion of a creative journal/portfolio at the end of the semester. The portfolio will consist of monthly journal writing discussing Sophomore Mentoring experiences, progress, and successes. Journal writing should be at least 1/2 page long. Creativity is encouraged in your portfolios; for example, pamphlets, worksheets, ticket stubs of events, pictures, quotes, drawings and artwork. Portfolios should be typed or neatly printed.

Class Policies

Disability Accommodations: Student with disabilities should submit a Notification of Disability Form to the professor within the first two weeks of class. This form is available through the Office of Disability Services in the Academic Development Center in McKillop Library. Students are advised to speak directly with the professor concerning specific requests for reasonable accommodations (e.g., extended time testing).

Attendance: To be a contributing member to your Sophomore Mentor Practicum and the First Year Experience Program you must be present at each class. Since this class is pass or fail, absences will lead to failure. Any prolonged illness or crisis must be documented and/or communicated as soon as possible so that missed materials and handouts may be discussed and made up according to the instructor's discretion.
