TRANSPORTATION SERVICES

DIAL 341-RIDE (7433)

All drivers are required to have a valid R.I. Class-1 Chauffeurs License and receive training in Basic First Aid and CPR. Faculty and staff members of the university who may drive a van also are to obtain the Class-1 Chauffeur's License.

The university has several passenger vans, which it utilizes to meet its transportation needs. These vans are registered as Public Service vehicles and are subject to a stringent inspection and maintenance schedule. The university shuttle service runs daily on campus from 6pm to 1am and off campus from 8pm to 1am. Vans and drivers are also provided for the FEINSTEIN Community Service Program and the Education Program where students are required to serve at various Elementary and Secondary Schools on Aquidneck Island. Transportation is also occasionally provided for medical reasons.

Vans and drivers are also provided to various university departments (i.e.; art, CHP, English, history, international programs, residence life, student life and career development) for field trips.

Transportation services also coordinates the university's contract with the Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (R.I.P.T.A.) to provide both on and off campus transportation. R.I.P.T.A. provides transportation to the university utilizing its environmentally conscious, natural gas powered trolleys. The trolleys are on campus daily from 6am to 8pm Monday through Saturday and from 10am to 8pm on Sunday. There are numerous bus stops on the campus and the #67 line takes students around campus and down Bellevue Avenue to Washington Square, then to the Gateway Center. From the Gateway Center students can use their Student ID to catch the #60 Bus to Providence, the #63 Bus to Middletown Shopping areas and Newport Towne Center Plaza and the #64, which travels to U.R.I. and the Kingston Railroad Station. Student ID's allow Salve students to use all of the above services free.
