U.S. SEN. JACK REED TO OFFER "IMPRESSIONS FROM IRAQ"

NEWPORT, R.I. – U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, who recently returned from three days of meetings in Afghanistan and Iraq, where he also visited with many Rhode Islanders serving in the Armed Forces, will speak about "Winning the Peace: Impressions from Iraq" at 10 a.m. Monday at the Pell Center.

Reed's address will be the keynote speech of the two-day workshop "Prepared for Peace? The Use and Abuse of 'Culture' in Military Simulations, Training and Education." The workshop involves cultural anthropologists, political and social scientists, scholars and military officers who have experience in distinct cultural milieus.

In addition to Reed's speech, Dr. Peter Liotta, executive director of the Pell Center, will deliver a public lecture titled "Keeping Secrets: Embedded Meanings in Balkan Images" at 6 p.m. Monday at the Pell Center.

Elected to the Senate in 1996, Reed, who succeeded Sen. Claiborne Pell, previously served three terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District. He has been a leader on education, health care and campaign finance reform, promoting and strengthening Rhode Island's economy and on defense, international affairs, child care and gun control issues.

Sen. Reed is a member of the Armed Services Committee, the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee and the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. He is the senior Democratic member of the Joint Economic Committee.
