SALVE AND THE NAVAL WAR COLLEGE SYMPOSIUM ADDRESSES LEGAL ASPECTS OF STRUGGLE AGAINST TERRORISM

By Public Affairs Staff

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University and the U.S. Naval War College will host the 14th Annual International Law Department (ILD) Advisory Board Workshop Thursday, Feb. 7 and Friday, Feb 8.

The ILD Advisory Board consists of senior active duty and retired judge advocates from all braches of the military as well as several Department of Defense civilian legal advisors.

The first day of the workshop, to be held at the Naval War College's Mahan Conference Center, will explore a wide range of operational law issues relevant to the College's research and war gaming programs. The second day, to be held at Salve Regina's Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, will be a half-day seminar consisting of panel discussions on legal issues in prosecuting the war on terrorism.

"We anticipate a comprehensive and meaningful exchange of ideas regarding the legal questions raised by our ongoing war on terrorism," said Rempt. "I think the workshop will be a valuable educational experience for both institutions."

"This timely and important dialogue about the role of international law in the war on terrorism is a welcome step in the continuing collaboration between the Pell Center and the Naval War College," said Richard A. Nuccio, Pell Center director.

Last September, officials from Salve Regina and the Naval War College signed an articulation agreement to benefit members of both academic communities through the sharing of resources at each institution. The agreement strengthens the bonds between the schools by allowing transfer of credits between Salve Regina and the NWC, by sharing library resources for authorized students and faculty from both institutions, by establishing research partnerships, exchanging long-range plans for academic conferences and symposia, and increasing participation in programs sponsored by both institutions, including Salve's Pell Center and the NWC's Center for Naval Warfare Studies.

The symposium is free and open to the public, however due to limited space, please RSVP to the Pell Center at ext. 2927, if you would like to attend.
