NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina's 33rd annual Governor's Ball, a black-tie gala that raises money each year for student scholarships, will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 in Ochre Court. To date, the ball has raised more than $4.5 million toward academic assistance.

Reservations for the Governor's Ball are $150 per person. In honor of Sister Jane Gerety's first ball as president, a special discounted ticket price of $100 is available to faculty and staff interested in attending the Governor's Ball. All proceeds go directly to student scholarship support.

This year's ball is chaired by Edward "Ned" Handy, president of Citizens Bank's Rhode Island unit, and his wife Polly. Serving as alumni chair is Sandra Flowers '65, '06 (PhD). The evening will include hors d'oeuvres from Blackstone Catering, music and dancing with Brass Attack and a late-night ice cream bar.

The Governor's Ball was started in 1977 with the assistance of then-Gov. J. Joseph Garrahy and his wife Margherite as a means to introduce outside support for the university and to raise scholarship funds for Salve Regina students. This act of goodwill has benefited countless students over the years.

Over the years, the Governor's Ball has become a well-known holiday tradition in the state of Rhode Island. The ball is attended by local business leaders, alumni, parents and friends, and many guests travel from out of state to attend, continuing to return year after year to join in the festivities.

Faculty and staff can reserve tickets for the Governor's Ball by calling Catherine Mureddu, assistant director of development for fundraising events, at Ext. 2381 or e-mailing muredduc@salve.edu. Alumni, parents and friends can reserve tickets online by clicking here.
