2009 COMMEMORATIVE ORNAMENT FEATURES JOHN LA FARGE'S MADONNA AND CHILD

By University Relations Staff

The 2009 commemorative ornament features John La Farge's Madonna and Child.

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina's 2009 commemorative ornament features artist John La Farge's opalescent leaded glass window of the Madonna and Child. Based on a famous painting by the Italian Renaissance master Raphael, this historic glass is part of a set of windows designed by La Farge around 1890.

Originally designed for a private chapel in Newport, the La Farge windows were removed from a local convent scheduled for demolition. Salve Regina is restoring the windows and will install them in the Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, set to be dedicated next year.

Other available ornaments include Antone Academic Center, Ochre Court "Through the Gates," Ochre Court "Seaside," Ochre Court "The Banquet," McAuley Hall, McKillop Library, Wakehurst and Minerva, which features one of 34 stained glass panels in the Wakehurst great hall. A special offer for 2009 includes the four ornaments of Ochre Court - Through the Gates, Medieval Glass, The Banquet and Seaside - for just $85.

With the exception of the Madonna and Child, which is $30, commemorative ornaments are $25 each and all proceeds benefit Salve Regina students. All commemorative ornaments are made of 24-karat gold finish over brass, measure approximately three inches by three inches and are packaged in an attractive gift box.

Salve Regina's commemorative ornaments are offered to faculty and staff at special rates of $20 each for one or two ornaments, $15 each for three to nine ornaments and $10 each for 10 or more ornaments. The faculty/staff rate for the Madonna and Child is $20 regardless of the quantity ordered. Faculty and staff should contact Elaine Powrie at Ext. 2315 to take advantage of this special offer.
