Salve Regina students and employees serve in New Orleans during the 2008 Alternative Spring Break trip.
NEWPORT, R.I. - Students, faculty and staff are invited to join the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life's annual Alternative Spring Break trip, scheduled for March 6-13, 2010. This year's trip will include service in the Bronx, one of the five boroughs of New York City.
In the Bronx, where students will serve, the median household income in 2008 was $35,000. Nearly 28 percent of the borough's residents - and 47 percent of its households headed by women with children - were living in poverty.
"As in previous trips, this Alternative Spring Break trip is perfectly tied to Salve Regina's mission of helping the poor and needy," said Phil Fiadino, campus minister. "My hope is that our students will see the need when they return to Salve Regina to find their own path that leads to service and justice."
The trip will include service with the Food Bank for New York City and Catholic Charities USA stocking food, serving at soup kitchens, etc.; visiting the Saint Joseph and Saint Mary Houses of Hospitality; visiting Saint Patrick's and Saint John the Divine cathedrals; and viewing a Broadway matinee.
The cost of the trip is $400, which includes food, lodging, transportation and the Broadway show. For more information, contact Fiadino at (401) 341-2227 or philip.fiadino@salve.edu.
