NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina was recently awarded more than $315,000 in grants to support the development of student and faculty learning centers within the McKillop Library.
Trustees of the Davis Educational Foundation granted the university $206,000 over two years to create a Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) on the library's second floor. This new center, which will include an experimental classroom and will be staffed by a director, will support faculty development. The CTL will help faculty integrate new technologies into the classroom, will foster an increased faculty exchange about best practices and challenges in the classroom, and will increase support and programming to promote excellence in teaching.
The Davis Educational Foundation, established as a public charitable foundation in 1985, supports the undergraduate programs of public and private, regionally accredited, baccalaureate degree granting colleges and universities throughout the six New England states. The foundation has provided more than $70.8 million in grants to more than 120 institutions.
The Champlin Foundations awarded the university $110,700 to reconfigure the library's main floor as a collaborative Learning Commons to focus on students' academic success. The Learning Commons will provide the resources needed to build on the university's participation in the Integrative Learning Project, supported by the Carnegie Foundation and the American Association of Colleges and Universities.
The Champlin Foundations are comprised of three foundations, the first established in 1932. The foundations make direct grants to tax exempt organizations, substantially all in Rhode Island, mostly for capital needs. Capital needs may consist of equipment, construction, renovations, the purchase of real property and reduction of mortgage indebtedness.
