MISSION
The
CIRCLE OF SCHOLARS
is a local Lifelong Learning Institute based at Salve Regina.
It is part of a large network of institutes affiliated with the Elderhostel
movement. The Circle has the mission of fostering the joy and satisfaction
of lifelong learning. Founded in Newport in 1994, the Circle offers seminars to members in just about every subject area: literature,
history, science, health, music, art, public affairs, religion, theater
and film. The program depends on members themselves to share their experiences
with fellow students by offering seminars. It also seeks out non-members
to present multi-week programs.
ORGANIZATION
The Circle is an open and democratically operated institute. It has bylaws, officers and subcommittees. Officers are elected at the annual meeting in June. They serve for a limited period of time so that there is always a renewal of ideas added to keep the Circle vibrant. The membership is surveyed yearly for ideas for seminars and for solicitation of members to offer seminars. At the annual meeting, a full accounting of funds is reported. Since Salve Regina provides classroom space, along with administrative support, the Circle contributes to the university for its generous help to the institute.
