About Salve Regina University Alumni Athletics Administration McKillop Library The Pell Center Giving to Salve Regina Salve Regina University

Dear New Student Seminar Instructors,

As you may know, Salve Regina University is in its 3rd year of utilizing the AlcoholEdu® for College. AlcoholEdu for College is designed as a Population-Level Prevention® program to be given to an entire population of students, such as an entering first-year class. This method creates a comprehensive learning experience that:

  • Motivates behavior change
  • Resets unrealistic expectations about the effects of alcohol
  • Links choices about drinking to academic and personal success
  • Helps students practice healthier and safer decision making

  • Part 1 of the course takes approximately 3 hours to complete, and we recommend that you take it in multiple sittings. This part ends after the Exam and Survey 2. You must earn a grade of 70 or higher to pass and receive credit for the course. The deadline for finishing Part 1 is Sunday, October 7th.
  • About one month after you complete Part 1, you will receive an email asking you to complete Part 2. The deadline to complete Part 2 is Monday, November 19th.

As one can see, our students will be taking 3 surveys throughout their experience, which will allow us to collect critical data on their attitudes and behaviors toward alcohol – including students’ readiness to change their behavior, which protective factors or high risk factors they exhibit, and what expectations they have toward alcohol. All of this data will help us better understand and meet the needs of our students.

Based on the timeline listed above, we will receive our students’ aggregate results by February of 2008.  This will come as a comprehensive report package accompanied with an AlcoholEdu Outcomes Review, a 45-minute phone call with an expert in prevention practice management.

Our current accomplishments to achieve the most successful implementation on our campus include the following:

  • We have coordinated across our Student Life and Residential Life department to create an AlcoholEdu Team. This team will collaborate to plan a smooth implementation, as well as to help reinforce key concepts and create discussion opportunities with students as they face many decisions during their transition into college.
  • We strategically selected the dates to implement AlcoholEdu for College. We selected this time period to reach our goals.
  • We will track our students’ progress through their AlcoholEdu experience – by monitoring students’ participation, we can ensure that as many students as possible will benefit from science-based education and helpful decision-making strategies related to alcohol covered in this program.

We look forward to sharing our progress throughout the implementation as well as the final comprehensive AlcoholEdu Reports with you this year. If you have any additional questions about AlcoholEdu for College, please feel free to contact me at 401-341-2641.

Thank you,

Kelly Willette
