PhD, Holocene glacier fluctuations in Iceland (University of Aberdeen, 1987). Currently, Reader in Tephrochronology, Institute of Geography, School of GeoScience, University of Edinburgh, Scotland UK, and Adjunct Professor (Research), Doctoral Program in Anthropology, The Graduate School, City University of New York. The focus of Andrew's current research is human-environment interactions, and he is a joint PI on a $2 million Leverhulme Trust Research programme on landscapes circum- Landám: Viking Settlement in the North Atlantic and its human and environmental consequences'. Andrew is author or co-author of 82 scientific papers and 19 Doctoral students and 15 Masters by Research students have successfully completed their studies under his supervision. He teaches a wide range of class room and field-based courses at the University of Edinburgh including Environmental Sensitivity and Change; Tephra Environment and People; Scottish Palaeoenvironments; Physical Geography fieldwork in Iceland. He is also currently involved in developing new e-learning approaches to supporting fieldwork.
