An excerpt from the April 15, 2009 Pell Center lecture by Michele Morrone, associate professor of environmental health science and the director of environmental studies at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

The Pell Center was established at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, by an Act of the United States Congress on September 28, 1996, to honor Senator Claiborne Pell.
The Pell Center promotes the primary objectives of Senator Pell's decades of public service: enhancing international dialogue to achieve a more peaceful world and preparing individuals for an informed and active role in local, national, and world affairs.
The Pell Center is committed to making a difference in the world by promoting programs that address issues critical to the well-being of societies and the planet, which honor one of the nation's most respected and accomplished statesmen.
