What You Can Do

Learn more about what you can do to be prepared during your tutoring sessions.

What You Can Do

  • Be sure you know exactly what the assignment is or, if you are unsure, bring a copy of the assignment with you.
  • Bring any books, handouts, or notes about the assignment with you.
  • If you have got this far, bring something to work with: a rough draft, an outline, a list. Typed text will be easiest to work with, or bring a disk or thumb drive so you can revise both during and after your writing conference.
  • If you are rewriting a paper, based on your professor's comments, do that first, and bring both versions with you. This way, the Writing Tutor can help you to determine if you have responded to all the comments.
  • Plan ahead and leave yourself plenty of time, especially if you are having problems with the assignment. Come in several days before an assignment is due.
  • Be realistic in your expectations of what you and a Writing Tutor can do. Tutors can point out problems, discuss alternatives, and make suggestions. But you must put in effort during the conference and in follow-up revision, if this work is to produce improvement in your writing.
  • Keep in mind that a Tutor's help, while based on experience and competency in writing, is neither the final word nor guaranteed for accuracy. The ultimate responsibility for your work lies with you.
