About Salve Regina University Alumni Athletics Administration McKillop Library The Pell Center Giving to Salve Regina Salve Regina University

The Writing Center welcomes student writers of all abilities and from all majors. The struggling writer will find help and encouragement with all aspects of creating a paper, while the advanced writer will find productive dialogue with other critical and insightful readers. The key is working together.

Our Peer Writing Tutors help student writers who want to work on expressing ideas clearly and organizing the presentation of supporting material. In concentrating on these tasks, Assistants rely on reading, writing, and tutoring skills, rather than experience with the subject at hand.

Above all, the Writing Center welcomes student writers in all stages of the writing process. Seated before a computer terminal, students can log on to the library's resources, brainstorm about topics, reorganize a rough draft, develop ideas, or just add that final polish. The student does the work, while the Assistant helps by asking questions and suggesting.

Finally, the Writing Center is NOT a fix-it shop. Peer Writing Tutors do not repair documents, either while the student writer sits watching, or in the student writer's absence, for later pick up. In fact, our motto is:

"The pen stays in the student writer's hand."

We currently have 13 trained writing tutors on staff. Peer writing tutors are undergraduate students who have tutoring experience, have been recommended by faculty, and have completed a one-credit training seminar run by the Coordinator. They are committed to helping you, the student, become a better writer, not just to “fixing” your paper. They welcome student writers at all levels (we tutor graduate students, too!) and at all stages of the writing process.
