Become a Resident Assistant

Becky Bernard, Resident Assistant

"Being a Resident Assistant is very interesting - there is so much responsibility. I was nervous at first, but it has been so rewarding that I plan to do it again next year. I love living in Miley and have a great group of girls on my floor. I've learned so much from them - we're like one big family."

RA Selection

Message from the Director

The Office of Residential Life begins the important process of selecting Resident Assistants (RAs) in January. Each RA represents the Office of Residential Life as a key staff member. They work under the direct supervision of a professional staff member known as an Area Coordinator. Together, these staff members work with students to create and maintain a residence hall atmosphere that fosters meaningful educational opportunities as well as valuable personal growth experiences. In addition to obtaining actual course credit, RAs complete an extensive training program that offers them an opportunity to develop valuable interpersonal and organizational skills.

For candidates, the selection process consists of an application (including essays and two recommendations), a group interview and an individual interview. Students who are interested in applying must be currently enrolled full time students, with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25, and must be in good judicial standing with the university.

We strongly suggest that candidates gather as much information about the job as possible during the selection process. I would suggest stopping by our office in New Residence, our selection information table in Miley, or an information session. Residential Life staff members (including current RAs) will be available to answer questions about the job and the selection process, and you can also grab an application. Check the selection timeline for dates and locations.

Being an RA is not just a job, it's a lifestyle. Successful candidates will have the desire and are willing to accept the commitment necessary to make a difference in the lives of their peers. These individuals must possess qualities of leadership, organization and genuine compassion towards their fellow students.
