TELEPHONE SERVICE

REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to bring their own telephone. It is important to plug it into the WHITE jack and set up the voicemail immediately. The voicemail access number is 270-6245 or simply 6245 from your room. You may be asked to provide your mailbox number. It is your 10-digit Cox phone number 401-341-4xxx. Press (*) to interrupt the greeting and then you will be asked to provide your password. The default password is 269266 (coxcom). Select a new password that is at least four digits long and easy to remember. To record your greeting, press 3, 2.

SERVICE DESCRIPTION

Basic telephone services are provided in the Residence Halls. The phone number is printed on the back of the door or on the white phone jack (401-341-4xxx). The plan includes free local and in-state calling. To call outside of the state, the student must use a prepaid calling card. Each phone number has a single voice mailbox. For more privacy, you may want to bring a multi-mailbox answering machine. Students will not be able to place calls to directory information services or for operator assistance from these phone lines. The cost for these telephone services (except for the prepaid phone cards) is included in your Residence Hall fee.

PHONE EQUIPMENT YOU CAN USE

You may bring any telephone that would work at your home. The one exception to this rule is a wireless (cordless) phone. Although these phones might work, they are not recommended since they all use the same radio frequencies and may cause interference with other wireless phones.

CALLING OUT OF STATE

You must use a prepaid calling card to make an out-of-state call. To use a prepaid calling card, simply dial ‘9’+ the 800# number printed on the back of the card and follow the directions shown there. (If you are using the AT&T prepaid calling cards sold on campus, use the system speed number ‘0’ to save time.)

CALLING FIRE/POLICE/AMBULANCE

Dial '9-911'. If you accidentally dial 9-911, please stay on the line to cancel the call. Salve Regina Security can also be reached for emergency calls at ‘5555’.

REPORTING ABUSIVE CALLS

If you receive a threatening or harassing phone call, quickly press the flash-hook (under the handset) and dial *76 to mark the call. This information may be obtained by the police from Cox Business Services to trace the call. Please notify Salve Regina Security to assist you in filing an official police report. This option should not be taken lightly but it is provided for your safety.

USING VOICE MAIL

If you have received a voice message, you will hear a “stutter tone” when you lift the handset. To retrieve your messages dial 6245 (MAIL). You can also check for messages from off campus by dialing 270-6245 (toll free anywhere in Rhode Island).

Also note, you may choose to upgrade your voice mail service, for a fee, during the first two weeks of the semester to provide a private voice mailbox for each room resident. You would purchase this upgrade at the Salve Regina Business Office. The fee for this service is $100 per semester and is not transferable if you move to another room.

USING SPEED DIAL

To use this speed dial, dial ‘*’ (the star key) plus the directory number (0-9) then ‘#’ (the pound key) to place your call. For example, to dial the 800# for AT&T Prepaid calling cards dial ‘*0#’ (star, zero, pound).

OBTAINING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

If you do not receive a dial tone, before calling Cox Business Services, please borrow a working phone from another student to test the line. If the line still does not work, call Cox Business Services at 866-402-0901 to report the problem and schedule a service call. You may also call this number to have your voice mail password reset.

CHARGES FOR COX SERVICE CALLS

There is no charge for a Cox Business Services call UNLESS the problem is with your telephone or line cord OR you are not present at the time you agreed on with Cox Business Services for the service call. In either of these two cases, your Salve Regina business office account will be charged $75.
