Advantages

Some early advantages the IT staff has identified include the following:

• Through a partnership with Hewlett Packard, Salve Regina is able to save students a significant amount of money as opposed to what they would pay if they purchased their computer elsewhere.
• Through this program Salve Regina is able to offer students a software suite of packages that reflects what the student will need for accomplishing their work here and tools that will help keep their computers safe and secure.
• The Laptop Program improves the overall quality of technical support the university can offer. Prior to the program, students could own any of 100 mixes of PC brands and models. This made it cumbersome in the past to offer the level of technical support that we would like to offer as hours of time could be spent on each individual computer simply trying to understand its unique characteristics.
• Each laptop is delivered with a Salve-ready image. This image insures the student that the laptop hardware is configured properly and the software is ready for use. Furthermore it allows support staff the ability to quickly restore student computers back to their original state should they suffer a fatal software error.
• Academically, the major advantage of the Laptop Program is that participating students will have access to the same technology as their instructors. Instructors will utilize this technology as they produce new course material and plan course activities.
