Do I have to participate in the Laptop Program?
Yes. The cost of the laptop for the 2008-2009 academic year will be a one-time fee of $2,350, separate from the tuition charge, that will be assessed on the first semester student bill. Although you can choose not to use the laptop, you will be billed for it regardless. There is no policy against bringing your own computer; however, Salve Regina University will not offer support for computers outside of the program, nor will it make its software package available for them.
What about if I bring my own computer? Can it connect to either Salve’s residential network or the wireless network?
In both cases, it is possible for you to connect your own computer to either of Salve’s networks. Instructions on how to do this will be posted online and at the Student Laptop Center. Keep in mind, though, that you are responsible for setting this up on your own and we can only offer limited assistance.
If I transfer to the University, do I have to purchase a laptop?
Transfer students who graduated from high school after 2005 are required to participate in the Laptop Program and must purchase the laptop from the University.
Can I purchase an Apple laptop through the program?
No. At this time, Apple computers are not available through this program.
Will I have administrative access to my laptop?
We put no restrictions upon your laptop. You will have full access and are free to install whatever programs you wish to.
Does my laptop belong to me?
Yes. Your laptop will become your personal property as soon as your first semester charges are paid in full. Once this is complete, you are free to keep it after graduation or if you withdraw from the university prior to graduation.”
Will my laptop be network ready?
Yes. Your laptop will be configured to connect to any of Salve’s networks without additional setup.
Will I use my laptop computer in every class?
Not necessarily. The amount you will use your laptop in your classes will depend upon the individual instructors.
What are the advantages to the program?
The major advantage is that participating students will have access to the same technology as their instructors. Instructors will utilize this technology as they produce new course material and plan their course activities.
What if my laptop is stolen?
You are responsible for loss or theft of your laptop. You should check with your parents personal insurance agent as most homeowners’ or renters’ policies may cover theft or damage. If your parents do not have homeowners/renters coverage for theft or damage to laptops, it is highly advisable to purchase supplemental personal property insurance. You may contact the Business Office for more information (ext. 2900).
