Keeping your computer and the information contained on it safe has become more and more of a priority with each coming year. New software vulnerabilities and computer viruses appear all the time. Salve Regina University places a great deal of interest in keeping its students' computers as secure as possible.
What is healthy computing?
Healthy computing refers to the steps taken to prevent damage to your computer or theft of its information from an outside source. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: computer hacking, viruses, worms, adware, spyware, and identity theft.
Why is it important?
Practicing safe computing is not simply for your own benefit, but also for the benefit of the entire community. Even a singular computer infected with a virus can affect the network connectivity of an entire dorm's floor or even the entire dorm. And once it spreads, this can jeopardize the stability of the entire campus network.
Students who choose not to follow safe computing practices not only place their own computer at risk, but put the entire campus network at risk. Therefore, students who choose not to follow these suggestions and procedures may lose their network privileges in order to protect the community's security.

Tips for Keeping Your Computer Safe and Secure
1) Run Windows Update on a weekly basis. By default, all laptops are set to automatically do this for you.
2) Run Symantec Anti-Virus on a daily basis. Update the program with new definitions at least once per week.
3) Do not open email from unknown senders or strange subjects. Do not open attachments unless you know who sent the file and what it is. If you are unsure, check with the sender before opening it.
4) Run and keep up to date Lava soft's Ad-Aware to prevent spam and adware from your computer.
5) If you use an instant messenger service, do not visit strange links, even if they are sent by users that you know.
