Scholarships for Service is an AmeriCorps Education Award Only program that engages college students committed to service who serve a minimum of 300 hours in exchange for a $1,000 education award. Ten slots are available for this scholarship, and students eligible for off-campus work study are encouraged to apply. A one-page essay about the student and their service background is required. Enrollment will be held Sept. 5-25.
The College Guide Project works with Rogers High School seniors to build one-on-one relationships and provide preparation and guidance for the college admissions process. As volunteers, the goal is to work with each student to complete the following:
The College Guide Project will not only help Rogers High School students, it will also help Salve Regina students build leadership skills by teaching them to work one-on-one and sharpening their interpersonal and time management skills. A joint effort involving Salve Regina, the Newport Police Department and Child & Family, the Positive Role Model Program helps young people improve their self esteem, keeps them in school and teaches them to better themselves. The main objective of the program is to have the university student provide special friendship and exposure to a university environment, give a view of the future that provides an incentive to stay in school, offer a sense of community spirit with awareness of the world beyond high school, participate in fun activities and support academics by demonstrating a better attitude toward school.
The program is a one-on-one mentoring program which requires fingerprinting and an interview with Child & Family, the Newport police and Salve Regina's Office of Community Service. Volunteer applications will be available beginning Sept. 21.
The Light the Night Walk is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual evening fundraising walking campaign designed to commemorate lives touched by cancer, build awareness of blood cancers and raise funds for cures. The Light the Night Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 3.
Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research, and it calls on people of all ages to take action in the fight. Walk with us toward a world without Alzheimer's disease. The Memory Walk fundraiser will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4 at the O'Hare Academic Center.
