RESOURCES
Child and Family Services
Volunteers are needed to assist staff in programs for children
from birth to age five. Daily activities include developing the children’s
social and communication skills, encouraging creativity and problem
solving, and fostering appreciation for the arts with the aim of cultivating
a positive self-image. Volunteers are also needed to work in group homes
and to participate in the “Positive Role Model Program.”
This project engages college students with young adolescents from the
supervised apartment living program. It targets high school students,
grades nine through 12, and aged 15-18.
Dr. Martin Luther King Center
Volunteers are needed to assist staff with daily activities for children
aged three to five. Programs include: preschool activities, playground
and gym activities, music, walking trips, and transport from Newport
kindergartens. Additional programs include “Feed-A-Friend”
food drive, and assisting in the Teen Center.
Boys
and Girls Clubs of Newport County
Volunteers are needed to assist staff in the daily management of activities
and programs. Programs include swimming, basketball, floor hockey, arts
and crafts, tutoring, ceramics, group clubs, game room activities, woodworking,
adult/senior swimming programs, tournaments, contests and supervision
of youth dances.
New
Visions for Newport County
New Visions is a community action agency mobilizing resources at the
neighborhood level to address the needs of the poor. It provides counseling
services, information and referral to individuals concerning public
assistance programs, housing, food stamps, emergency food, financial
assistance and camp programs. Volunteers are needed as childcare aides,
classroom assistants, translators for non-English speaking participants,
high school equivalency tutors, mentors for adolescents, computer instructors,
and health service assistants. Help is also needed for food and clothing
drives.
Volunteers in Newport Education (VINE)
Tutorial and enrichment programs for children in the Newport Public
Schools is provided by volunteers under the directorship of VINE. Each
school has its own coordinator who with principals and teachers. Programs
include: Career Days, Career Resource Speakers, LVA elementary help,
Arts Enrichment Program, Reading is Fundamental (RIF), Partnerships
in Education with Navy, Mentor Program, and After School Tutoring. The
program serves all elementary, junior, and high schools in Newport.
Literacy
Volunteers of America, Newport County
LVA provides tutor training, workshops in Basic Reading and English
as a Second Language; recruits, trains, and matches volunteer tutors
with adults in need of basic skills, and offers individualized confidential
instruction at no cost to the student.
Salvation Army
Programs include: Food voucher/food pantry; fuel assistance; Christmas/Thanksgiving
assistance; soup kitchen; counseling; and an after school program for
"Children at Risk."
Global Fun Day - A Kid's Conference
Fourth graders from 18 local schools are invited to represent their
schools at this annual event held on the Salve Regina campus. The goal
of the conference is to promote the children’s appreciation for
their ethnic heritage and increase awareness of cultures from around
the world. Students are needed to organize the registration, prepare
the materials and create interest and enthusiasm for the event. Throughout
the day students serve as tour guides, game coordinators, registrars,
and hosts for the luncheons.
Learning Unlimited
The Learning Unlimited Program (LU) at Salve Regina University is a Department of Education/Special Education Program initiative to promote an inclusive learning community.

are posted in the community service office as they become available.
