Volunteering at Norman Bird Sanctuary

William Carroll '11 positions a birdhouse in the south field of the Norman Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary offers opportunities for students to volunteer with marketing and office work, exhibits and animal care.

Andrea Rizzo Foundation

Volunteers are needed to help with the foundation's annual fundraising initiative, which includes creating and sending flyers, sending thank you notes, creating additional fundraising events off campus and collating packets of information.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County

Volunteers are needed to help in their after-school program with homework, games, sports, office administration, facility work and playground duty. Volunteers must complete an application and orientation and get a BCI check before volunteering.

Child & Family

Volunteers are needed to serve as Homework Helpers for Child & Family's residential programs:

  • Monday through Thursday from 2:30-4 p.m. at the house for girls ages 8-12, located on Jean Terrace in Middletown. The contact is Amy at abettencourt@childandfamilyri.com.
  • Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30-4 p.m. at the house for boys ages 6-10, located on Maple Avenue in Newport. The contact is Meghann at mgould@childandfamilyri.com.

Cranston Calvert Elementary School

Volunteers are needed for their after-school program, held from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Volunteers are needed to help with snacks, recess, after-school activities and dismissal.

Heatherwood Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center

Volunteers are needed to help daily. Activities include reading to residents, giving hand massages, room visits, Wii game teachers, piano players, nail painters, wheelchair walkers, bingo help, crafters and scrapbooking.

Lucy's Hearth

Volunteers are needed in this shelter for women and children to help with homework, sorting/organizing donations, child care assistance and many various activities. A volunteer orientation is required.

Newport Public School System

Volunteers are needed to help students in grades K-5 with mathematics. Volunteers provide in-classroom mathematics help under the guidance of teachers. A training program and a police background check are required.

Norman Bird Sanctuary

Volunteers are needed to help with:

  • Marketing and office work, including education mailings, press releases, advertising and more.
  • Exhibits, which includes designing interpretive murals and hands-on exhibits for their barn and animal care rooms.
  • Animal care, which includes caring for more than 20 education animals including reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, mammals and birds of prey.

Schedules are flexible, although volunteers are asked to commit to a weekly or biweekly schedule. No prior experience is necessary and training will be provided.

Odyssey HealthCare

Volunteers are needed to provide companionship to terminally ill individuals in their homes for two to four hours each month. Training is required, but will take place on campus.

Visiting Nurse Services of Newport & Bristol Counties

Volunteers are needed to support students enrolled in GED classes. Volunteers must have a basic knowledge of both math and English and enjoy working with high school-aged students.
