Introduction

What is an internship?

An internship is a work experience wherein a student has agreed to undergo supervised practical training provided in a career-related workplace or environment. An intern typically and ideally learns - under the influence and leadership of a supervisor, or mentor - through the application of certain skills needed to begin employment and thrive in a chosen career. Salve Regina University requires its interns to follow a prescribed hourly and/or daily work schedule at the internship site, while continuing contact with their designated Faculty Sponsor to report progress in the practical application of their prescribed internship responsibilities.

***It is recommended to complete ALL internship paperwork three weeks prior to when you expect to begin your internship.

Note: If you are seeking an internship in conjunction with a required Internship course for your major, you must consult with the individual faculty instructing the course for syllabus requirements and associated paperwork/forms.

The University recognizes as bona fide internships (either for academic credit or field experience) only those of currently registered students who agree to written conditions to be followed by all parties signing the agreement form. Internships typically run for the duration of a semester or the summer and may earn compensation, but only the intern and employer need share this information. The intern's anticipated performance - as originally set by the number of hours per week and the specific responsibilities prescribed - generally establishes the number of credits to be awarded, which is a responsibility of the Faculty Sponsor.

What are the benefits of an internship experience?

For the college student, an internship widens her/his view of the occupational and professional requirements to be addressed to reach career success in a chosen field. Often, industry recruiters for entry level personnel to be hired from colleges expect - often demand - to interview for employment only those seniors who have had practical experience in their field of study. Part-time work, volunteering, cooperative education, and internships usually provide ideal settings for students to participate in actual work for which their academic courses have prepared them.

Other benefits of completing an internship are opportunities for networking among those professionals employed at your work site who may assist you in obtaining employment there or elsewhere after graduation, deciding if this is a good "fit" to your career ambitions, and building confidence and maturity of character, while demonstrating skills and talents that do not emerge in an academic setting. In addition, showing two (even three) completed internships on your résumé strongly raises your proven experience level and qualifications during full-time job candidate screenings for interview selections.

Who is eligible for internships?

Juniors and seniors in nearly all majors, whose academic standing and career focus are considered good at Salve Regina should consider at least one internship during their academic career. All students considering an internship should make an appointment with their Career Advisor to: learn how to use our available tools to locate an internship; develop a solid résumé; and (if required by their department) obtain paperwork for credit or field experience internships.

Note: Students who are seeking internships in conjunction with a required internship course for their major, must first consult with the individual faculty instructing the course for syllabus requirements and associated paperwork/forms. Sophomores with very good academic standing and sufficient maturity are urged to speak with their department chair and academic advisor before undertaking an internship. Freshmen should plan for an internship to begin after establishing a solid academic foundation and declaration of a major.
