"Singing with the Madrigals in Ochre Court."
- Paul Kip Otis-Diehl '87

"There was a joint recital planned by Salve Regina's Marion Van Slyk. Our Glee Club was to travel to NYC to sing with the men's club of Fordham University. We women made our blue two piece outfits from a Vogue pattern. Each had a princess style (not too fitted of course) top with floor length side pockets skirt. How do I know so much about our dress? My mom being a French seamstress sewed many of them. We practiced for days. There was the pianist, a petite gal, Kristine O'Donnell maybe who went over and over the song Wilkommen which was German for "welcome." The Friday came and off went a number of girls with nuns as escorts, leaving the campus by students and parents cars. My red, white and blue '56 Buick Special carried 7 of us, four in the huge back seat, traveled light, of course no make-up allowed. There was Sally and Marian Mathison, Fran O'Brien, maybe her sis Tassie and two others. First part of the trip was getting in line for double-ender ferry to Jamestown. Going through Connecticut we stopped at Darien to call my aunts. Of course there was the dinner invite we hoped would happen. I told Aunt Evelyn we would come on the Sunday trip back home. All my family in Connecticut would gather Sunday to hear the big-city stories of us seven celebs.

As I waited for directions as to where to park at Fordham one of the Brothers leaned on the hood of the car. Looking down at the white-walls he shouted "Oh my God this tire is bald. You can't be riding on this!" Five minutes later it was determined the car was unsafe to drive. A quick call to my uncle in Connecticut with a conversation between the Brother and all was arranged. My three uncles, the Brothers, some students, and friends arranged for four new tires, alignment, lube, along with whatever else could be done that Saturday while we rehearsed. I never knew who did what, who paid, or how much work was done that day on the Buick. Come Sunday the seven of us packed our bags in the monstrous trunk, the Brother led us in prayer to St. Christopher (I believe he was a Saint then) and off we went. Happy, carefree times when we learned unity, charity, mercy, and above all, the power of prayer. P.S-That Buick as forever referred to as Old Faithful thereafter.

"Classes with the 'Tobin Twins.'"
- Sister Marie Zita Wenker'73

"Not only all the memories as a student-winning a Woodrow Wilson fellowship and the 100 days until graduation party, but as an instructor of Anatomy and Physiology. My last class - teaching about birth control to the nurses and being 9 months pregnant. The coffee and cookie party in St. Joseph Hall on a Sunday afternoon with 55 new lawyers in the Navy. How many marriages from that party?!"
- Gertrude St, Marie McPhail '66

"My most memorable "evening" at Salve Regina is Freshman year-attending a class on the 3rd floor of Ochre Court in 1965 when the lights went out-about 28 screaming females were led down 3 flights of stairs with our professor holding a flashlight."
- Patricia Gallagher Snyder '69

"The wonderful friendships formed at Salve Regina. Many have remained lifelong!"
- Barbara Travers Brady '60

"Becoming engaged in my junior year on a boat trip with my classmates. Our marriage lasted 47 years!!! They were wonderful years!"
- Joan Cullinan Casartellos '54

"One of my favorite memories of Salve Regina College (University now) is when I was living at Mercy Hall in my freshman year. When we came back from Spring Break, one of my roommates, Lee Cuneo, brought back the record There's a Summer Place and she played it over and over and over again. I think Lee was personally responsible for that record going to #1 on the record charts in 1960."
- Jeanne Carello Chieppo '64

"So many wonderful memories-Freshmen Year being at Ochre Court-Dinners held in the "great" dining room, wearing bathing suits to classes under trench coats to sun on the rocks between classes. Masses in the beautiful chapel, walking the Cliff Walk, Forty Steps during the storms, formal dances in the grand ballroom, sing-a-long in the smoker, etc, etc."
- Theresa Coleman Nones '61

"Graduation Day. It was a picture perfect day overlooking the ocean and Ochre Court. I fondly remembered my college years, friendships, experiences, professors, warm and cheerful memories and felt so blessed and thankful I was well prepared for whatever the future was to hold."
- Claire Conley Eyrich '65

"Pam Minch, Stephanie Lang, and Michele Napoletano!"

1956: "Watching the Presidential Yacht sail by Ochre Court while we were in Theology class; 1957: Completion of my sloper (my base pattern) in H.E. and my roommates! (Lorraine); 1959: Trying to get Sister Mary Martha to enjoy an Awful-Awful with us.

"History Classes with Sister Martina"

"I made 5 best friends my first year at Salve Regina and we are still best friends even though we all live many miles apart. I love you Anna, Deb, Mario, Tim, and Pete! You can't beat the friends, education, and location Salve Regina offers."
-Jacquie Ruma Shemek '99

"The days in Ochre Lodge my junior year, remain strong in my memory. My dear friends who have remained a very big part of my life are vivid examples of all that is worthwhile at Salve Regina. Bright, committed, and extraordinarily connected individuals shape my memories. Dr. Fonts, Dr. Werle, Sr. Kathryn Mary remain terrific educators who were curious and keen in their passions about human development and special education. Recently the Salve Regina newsletter expressed love for my friend Patty Eagan who we lost in Nov. 2005. We have been together for 38 years. Few can have so many memories."
- Jacquelyn LaneTaylor '72

"One of my favorite memories was the Father/Daughter dinner dance sophomore year. It was held at Ochre Court and I felt like a princess walking down the steps of the Grand Staircase on the arm of my father"
-Elizabeth "Tish" Denham Harrington '71

"My favorite Salve Regina memory-very simple: The beauty of the campus and the knowledgeable and caring professors and staff members."
-Rebecca J. Campbell '96

"When Salve Regina memories stir, my mind always goes back to one remarkable and marvelous teacher, Sister Mary Jean. Here was a teacher who could hold a class so spellbound and enthralled that a golden autumn of 1968 vanished and other times and places vividly loomed up around us. She spun spells with gossamer words that magically transported us to English villages where daughters and advantageous matches were the sole concern or to dank London where villains lurked in dark alleyways and evil rolled in on the tide. Sister Mary Jean, with her love of literature and joy in teaching, was a powerful, infectious force that filled her entire classroom to the brim. Though diminutive in stature, she cast an enormous shadow on her English majors. She was, in fact, a giant. She had great influence on my life. I went on to receive my Master's in English at Georgetown University-but no one ever came close to Sister Mary Jean's classroom presence or her enchanting magic. She was a conjuror. Her alchemy was wrought with wondrous words-and I remember. Oh, do I remember!"
