Factors that Can Contribute to Academic Difficulty

Once you find yourself on Academic Probation it is time to do a realistic self-assessment of how you reached this academic status. Taking an honest look at your academic performance each semester is an important step in making progress this semester and in the future. It is difficult to improve and overcome obstacles or distractions if you are not aware of what they are or how they have affected your academic performance.

Here are some general reasons why many students experience academic problems:

Motivation & Purpose

This can involve several things. Do you have clear academic goals? Have you taken courses that are leading you in the direction of a career you are interested in? Do you have career interests or are you still largely undecided about what you plan to do after college?

Difficulty Adjusting to College Life

The new freedoms experienced by college students often lead to a lack of structure in one’s life. It is hard to develop personal boundaries when you are faced with new opportunities and distractions each day. There is no question that college life demands personal discipline, especially when one is experiencing academic difficulty.

Study Skills

The level of work that is required of you at the collegiate level can be demanding, and if you are not prepared for the intensity of your course load or even of a particular course you can find yourself in academic difficulty. It might not be about a lack of academic preparation, but rather an inability to develop a timetable for study that can deter you from success. Procrastination may also have played a part in your current academic status.

Personal Issues

Academic difficulty can stem from events outside the academic arena, or outside your collegiate life. You might have been dealing with an issue for a period of time, or you are unexpectedly faced with something in your life which challenges your academic performance. Health related issues are often a factor affecting academic performance, as are personal relationships, familial responsibilities and financial instability.
