Life Off Campus

Students who live off campus are still obligated to abide by the student code of conduct. Behavior that is inconsistent with University standards is subject to disciplinary action through the conduct process.

In addition, the state of Rhode Island, the city of Newport and the towns of Middletown and Portsmouth have laws and ordinances that promote order in the community, some of which are outlined below. Students living off-campus are bound by these ordinances, and their conduct should be compatible with those ordinances. Consequences for violations may be costly and could result in a permanent criminal record.

Social Host Laws

Students assume all the risks and liabilities associated with state and local laws regarding drinking, age, noise and public safety when hosting guests in their off-campus residences. The University responds promptly to complaints from neighbors and, if necessary, follows with appropriate disciplinary action. Court decisions may hold a host liable for personal injury or property damage caused to a third party as the result of irresponsible service of alcoholic beverages to guests, and that liability is compounded when minors are involved.

Waste Disposal and Recycling

Newport: The city of Newport utilizes a cart-based collection system for trash and recycling, which is available to all residential dwellings with less than eight units. Students may request a new resident packet, which covers the program in more detail, by calling the Clean City Program at (401) 845-5613.

Bulky waste and items that don’t fit in the carts are collected on the first and third Thursdays of the month, by appointment. All bulky waste items must display a pre-paid sticker in order to be collected.

Middletown: The town of Middletown utilized a cart-based, pay-as-you-throw collection system for trash and recycling, which is available to all residential dwellings. Bulky waste and items that don’t fit in the carts are collected on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, by appointment. All bulky waste items must display a pre-paid sticker in order to be collected.
