Finding a Rental

Salve Regina is not responsible for any lease that students sign, as the University does not inspect any landlords or rentals. Students should not feel pressured to sign a lease until they feel ready to do so.

Important Considerations

Cost: Students should consider the cost when splitting between roommates, and know whether or not utilities are included as part of their rent.

Start/end dates: Students should pay close attention to the start and end dates of their lease. Preseason athletes and other pre-approved early arrivals are temporarily housed on campus until the Friday before classes begin. Students whose lease has not yet begun are responsible for their own accommodations on dates when University housing is not provided.

Parking availability: There is restricted parking in Newport from May 1 through Oct. 1. Parking is restricted from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. or all day (24 hours) on designated streets. Students should determine whether there is a parking space included in their rent and/or if they will need to obtain a residential parking sticker.

Safety and security: Before signing a lease, students should remember to check security and safety measures in their rental.

  • Are the doors, windows and screens in good condition and do they lock?
  • How old is the heating system and does the heat work in each room?
  • Are there any signs of mold, rodents or insects?
  • Are there fire safety measures like smoke detectors and a fire escape?
  • Is the water pressure consistent with both hot and cold water?
  • How many exits are there?
  • Are there any pipes or wires that aren't concealed?
  • Do all of the appliances work sufficiently?
  • Do the showers, sinks and toilets drain properly or do any of them leak?

Living spaces: Before signing a lease, students should be comfortable with the rental's interior and exterior spaces.

  • How many bedrooms are there?
  • Does the kitchen have a stove or refrigerator?
  • Is there a living room or study space?
  • Are the floors, walls and ceilings in good condition?
  • Is there any extra storage space?
  • Are the steps, sidewalk, porch and/or yard in good condition?
