Community leaders will discuss ‘Peace and Conflict in Ireland’

NEWPORT, R.I. - Representatives from the Inch House Irish Studies Center, Ireland's first dedicated center for visiting college students and staff, will give a public presentation Tuesday, Nov. 16 as part of their visit to Salve Regina’s campus. Tony Johnston and John Guthrie will discuss "Peace and Conflict in Ireland: Reflections from the Field" at 4 p.m. in the DiStefano Lecture Hall.

Johnston and Guthrie will discuss their co-leadership working across communities (Catholic/Protestant, Nationalist/Unionist, Republican/Loyalist) in Ireland. They will discuss the challenges and opportunities that communities transitioning to peace experience with regard to intergroup relations as ceasefires solidify, economies and technologies shift and new relationships are forged.

Johnston is president and owner of the Inch House Irish Studies Center, which hosts American colleges and universities on various types of programs, many of which focus on conflict resolution. Guthrie has held a number of local service jobs, including clerk in the court service. He has worked as a community activist and is currently a key participant in Inch House.

Inch House speakers include local, national and international policymakers, renowned academics, community leaders, politicians and business people. The center is the official host to several American colleges and universities, including Alverno College, Grand Rapids College, Greenville College, Mount Mary College, St. Olaf College, University of Massachusetts, University of Missouri and Western New England College.
