Lacouture presents April 14 public lecture, Gallery talk on Chinese cultural exchange

Tuesday, April 05, 2011

NEWPORT, R.I. – Jay Lacouture, professor of art at Salve Regina University, will present an illustrated lecture at 6 p.m. and a Gallery talk at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 14 in the Antone Academic Center, corner of Lawrence and Leroy avenues.

Both talks, free and open to the public, will focus on a cross-cultural dialogue on Chinese and American ceramics.

Lacouture will present “Exchange & Inspiration II” from 6-7 p.m. in Room 107, followed by a talk from 7-8 p.m. in the adjacent Hamilton Gallery, where the related exhibit, “Exchange and Inspiration” features the work of Li Chao, Bob Anderson, Marvin Sweet and Lacouture. This exhibit runs through April 17.

Last month at Salve Regina, Lacouture hosted a two-day public symposium that brought together educators and ceramists from China and the United States to explore the history and cultural exchange that has taken place in Jingdezhen, China.

Jingdezhen has been the center of China’s porcelain production since the Han Dynasty (220 B.C. – 220 A.D.). Presentations will highlight the history, economic landscape and contemporary creative exchange through studio demonstrations, a gallery exhibition, film screening and panel discussions.

Lacouture served as a visiting artist in Jingdezhen for five weeks during fall 2009 at the West Virginia University/Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute International Ceramic Program.
