Public invited to lectures, Art League of R.I. ‘Member’s Show’ opening on Feb. 16

Wednesday, February 09, 2011

NEWPORT, R.I. – Two local artists will present public talks in conjunction with the opening of the Art League of Rhode Island’s 11th Annual Members’ Show on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at Salve Regina University.

Tom Deininger, a Salve Regina graduate whose multimedia work – including junk assemblages – has garnered worldwide attention, will host a free, illustrated “Artist’s Talk” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 in the DiStefano Lecture Hall, located in the Antone Academic Center on Lawrence Avenue.

Deininger, a Salve Regina art alumni who works out of a large studio space in Fall River, Mass., has exhibited his works in public and private collections throughout the world.

Following Deininger’s talk, the public is invited to the Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery, also located in the Antone Academic Center, for the grand opening of the Art League of Rhode Island’s Members’ Show from 5-7 p.m. The ALRI show is a multi-media exhibit featuring the work of member artists from throughout the state. It will run through March 13.

Preceding both events on Wednesday will be a public talk given by current Salve Regina art major Elise Jones, a senior who received the 2010 Dr. Gabriele Bleeke-Byrne Art Travel Scholarship. Jones will present an illustrated talk chronicling her experience traveling to Greece last summer, a trip funded in part through the scholarship fund.

Jones’s talk will be given at 3 p.m. in the DiStefano Lecture Hall. All events on Wednesday are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Hamilton Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 p.m.

Salve Regina’s art department is among a select group of accredited members of the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD) who devote themselves exclusively to a bachelor of arts curriculum with a major in studio art or art history with concentrations in ceramics, graphic design, photography, painting and drawing.

The university also offers an interdisciplinary major in interactive communication technology that stresses the use of technology in an increasingly visual world.
