NEWPORT, R.I. – Through a partnership with Zipcar, Inc., the car-sharing network, Salve Regina University is offering convenient transportation options for students, faculty and staff ages 18 and older, as well as for members of the local community ages 21 and over.
The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to Zipcar members. Salve Regina is initially offering two vehicles, a Ford Focus and Nissan Sentra, which are parked at Miley Hall.
This year, Salve Regina University members can join for a $25 annual membership fee, with rates on campus Zipcar vehicles starting as low as $7.50 per hour and $69 per day. Gas, insurance, reserved parking spots, up to 180 miles of driving per day and roadside assistance are included in Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days.
Salve Regina University students, faculty and staff can join at http://www.zipcar.com/salve.
“We’re excited to begin this partnership with Zipcar,” said Gerry Willis, associate dean and director of campus life. “All our students, especially our freshmen students, will really benefit from having a car that they can use quickly and easily.”
Participating members with smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices, may download the Zipcar mobile application to make reservations, lock and unlock the vehicles and honk the horn to help locate the vehicle. Members can also use Zipcar’s “Reserve a Zipcar” app on Facebook to view available Zipcars and make, extend or cancel a reservation all from their Facebook account. Reservations can also be made over the phone or on Zipcar’s website.
“In addition to providing a convenient and cost-efficient transportation option, Zipcar will also help Salve Regina University to reduce its carbon footprint,” said Michael Serafino, general manager for Zipcar. “With this program, today’s student drivers can experience the latest fuel-efficient vehicles, while helping them reduce their cost of living and address congestion and parking demands on campus.”
